Staff Picks – August 2017
Summer is not over yet – so keep reading!
The One and Only Ivan / Kate Applegate (Junior Fiction) – Mary Ann
Having spent 27 years behind the glass walls of his enclosure in a shopping mall, Ivan has grown accustomed to humans watching him. He hardly ever thinks about his life in the jungle. Instead, Ivan occupies himself with television, his friends Stella and Bob, and painting. But when he meets Ruby, a baby elephant taken from the wild, he is forced to see their home, and his art, through new eyes.
Here are some great books recommended by our staff.

On August 21st, 2017, all of North America will experience a solar eclipse. In our little pocket of southwest Michigan, we will have a partial eclipse beginning at approximately 2:21 PM EST. In celebration of this natural wonder, Lincoln Township Public Library is holding a Sun Party at the Lincoln Township Community Center Park from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. We have prepared activities for all ages, including sensory bins for ages 2-6, coloring pages, buttons, “sun” themed snacks, a fun photo-op board, and a time capsule that we will open at the next eclipse in 2024! Our staff will also provide materials and instruction on building a pinpoint viewer.
During the month of August, children ages two to six can Play to Learn on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 10:30 a.m.
Play to Learn is taking the place of our regularly scheduled story times. Caregivers and kids are welcome in our story time room 10:30-11:30 to use their imaginations and discover a new way to play. This August we are focusing on S.T.E.A.M. activities.
S.T.E.A.M. SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, ART, & MATH
Even a two year old isn’t too young to discover S.T.E.A.M. through exploring sea shells, reading a book with their caregiver on an iPad, building with blocks, doing open ended painting with tempura cakes, and attempting a puzzle. Kids entering Kindergarten will get a jump on exploring skills they will learn this school year.
Each week will feature new activities, but caregivers are welcome to bring their kids multiple days during the week. Younger siblings are also welcome to attend and play in our special Little Learners area in the story time room.
