I started to lift weights when I was in high school and have been doing it for close to 20 years. The health benefits are great, as lifting weights allows me to get stronger and to have more energy throughout the day.
Aside from the physical health benefits, lifting weights helps me mentally as well. There’s nothing that helps me clear my head better than cranking up some Pearl Jam tunes and exerting myself to maximum capacity lifting, pushing, and pulling as much weight as I can. Afterwards, I feel a great sense of accomplishment, and when I lift weights regularly I feel better about myself.
Perhaps your New Year’s Resolution was to get into an exercise program but you gave up after a few weeks back in January. Or maybe you’ve always wanted to start a weightlifting program but wouldn’t know where to begin. If so, there’s good news: Lincoln Township Public Library is partnering with the St. Joseph YMCA to offer a Beginning Weightlifting class on June 13 at 7:30 p.m. This event will take place at the YMCA, 3665 Hollywood Road in St. Joseph.
Make sure to prepare yourself and bring the correct gear along with you, whether that’s to the classes or going at it alone in your local gym. You’ll want a water bottle, some breathable, sports clothing and some proper lifting shoes. Shoes like Ryderwear’s get you as close to the ground as possible for optimal lifting and provide you with good stability.
