Keep Reading All Summer Long

July 31, 2017 by Hollie Ayres

Even though summer reading is over for the summer, we encourage all kids to keep reading.

Kids Need to Read Daily for 20 minutes

A report – America Reads Challenge – from the US Dept of Education shows that a child who reads 20 minutes a day (for five days each week) will have an equivalent of 60 additional school days.

This additional 400 minutes a month will result in a better reader and writer who will gain more knowledge and vocabulary.

Summer Learning Loss

When kids take a break from school, they can lose some of the learning from the prior school year.  To help kids succeed in school, the library works to keep them reading throughout the summer.

Some Tips

  • A challenging book: if the child in your care is finding a book challenging, offer to read it aloud together.  You can either switch readers each page or chapter.  Or read it aloud for them.

  • Let them read what they want:  it’s summer time so it’s a good opportunity to read something that isn’t required reading.

  • Audio is an option too: this format is great for reluctant readers, for kids with learning disabilities and for long road trips!

  • Ask a librarian for recommendations and advice:  They read a lot of great books!

Homeschooling and the Public Library

April 12, 2017 by Brian Johnston

Homeschooling has become a popular alternative to traditional schools. It is estimated that in 2012, about 1.8 million students were homeschooled in the United States – more than twice as many as were just 13 years earlier. And by all indications, more the number of homeschooling families appears to be growing each year. Many students can learn so much while being homeschooled. From understanding college essay hooks, how to write a book report or even create presentations, there is nothing that you cannot learn while you are being taught at home. It is important to make the most out of this. If you are in need of some extra assistant with your book reports, you can always check out online help from sites such as www.collegepaperworld.com.
