The Idea Behind the Box
Berrien Books for Babies started as an outreach idea for promoting literacy for infants and mothers in Berrien County. As the idea began to take shape, it occurred to us that the best place to reach mom and baby would be in the hospital right after the birth of their new little one. Corewell Health Lakeland Hospitals were immediately on board and were very encouraging that we pursue the initiative.
We applied for funding to the Frederick S. Upton Foundation and were thrilled when we won the “Big Idea” grant to turn this dream into a reality. In just a short amount of time, we began to assemble the first boxes. We wish all of our families joy at this exciting time in their lives and hope that this little box encourages you to read, sing and play with your baby and to go get that library card!
